Nolan on Track to Retain Assembly Seat

Cathy Nolan (Facebook)

June 24, 2020 By Christian Murray

Cathy Nolan, who has represented the 37th Assembly District since 1985, has a significant lead in her race to be reelected.

Nolan had generated 52 percent of the votes cast ahead of Mary Jobaida, with 33 percent, and Danielle Brecker, with 15 percent–with 96 percent of scanners reported, according to the NYC Board of Elections unofficial results at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday.

However, an unprecedented number of absentee ballots are yet to be counted. The BOE will begin counting absentee ballots by hand after June 30.

Nolan currently has a 1,600 vote lead, a lead that is unlikely to be overcome.

Nolan, a Ridgewood resident, ran a race where she emphasized her experience and leadership position in the assembly. Nolan spent 12 years as the Assembly’s education chair from 2006-2018, and was appointed deputy speaker in 2018.

Jobaida and Brecker positioned themselves as more progressive than Nolan and argued that the incumbent had become complacent. Nolan, who was a supporter of Amazon coming to Long Island City, had not faced a primary challenge in a decade.

The district–which covers Long Island City, Sunnyside, Ridgewood and parts of Astoria–has undergone significant change in the past decade, with rapid gentrification and an influx of a more diverse population.
