The NYPD has been the subject of a lot of controversy in recent times—but a Catholic school in Middle Village wants to show the department some appreciation.

St. Margaret Catholic Academy, located at 66-10 80th St., will be hosting a prayer ceremony on Saturday, May 1st to honor the families of fallen police officers. The event will be held with “Kids Backing the Blue,” a group formed in 2020 that aims to help children of deceased police officers.

The service will take place outside of the school at 10 a.m. to memorialize the deaths of police officers from the NYPD, as well as Newark and Paterson in New Jersey.

Comfort packages will also be handed out to the families of the deceased officers—including stuffed animals, memorial jewelry, children’s books, memorial keepsakes, as well as dolls resembling the fallen officers.

The school held a fundraiser in March to provide the care packages. The packages will be going to the children of six NYPD officers killed in the line of duty and two from related illnesses. There will be packages for the families of deceased officers from New Jersey.

The officers to be remembered include NYPD Chief of Transportation William Morris, Inspector Justin Lenz, Deputy Inspector Denis Mullaney, Detective Peter Gianfrancesco, and Police Officers Terence Connelly, Michael Geraldi, Angel Santiago, and Anastasios Tsakos.

City council member Robert Holden and Chief Jeffrey B. Maddrey of the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau are expected to be in attendance.
