Fifth Annual Sunnyside Post Mile Set for Oct. 5, Register Now

Aug. 16, 2019, Staff Report

The fifth annual Sunnyside Post Mile is set to take place on the streets of Sunnyside and Woodside on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The Queens Post is proud to bring back this popular, family-friendly event which is co-organized by the Sunnyside Post, the Woodside Sunnyside Runners and Sunnyside Community Services.

“Last year, we had our biggest turnout ever–with more than 500 people participating,” said Christian Murray, publisher of the Sunnyside Post. “The event has become a family tradition so we expect it to be bigger than ever this year–especially now we are in our fifth year.”

The run/walk will start by Lou Lodati Park on 43rd Street. Participants will then turn right onto Barnett Avenue, go up 39th Avenue through to 50th Street before finishing on Skillman Avenue at 44th Street.

The roads will be closed for less than an hour.

Participants with strollers and dogs that are leashed are welcome–but must start the event at the back of the field.

“I think this event is the essence of what our community is all about,” said Erica Campbell, an organizer from the Woodside-Sunnyside Runners group. “It brings the community together and helps raise money for a great organization.”

All proceeds go to Sunnyside Community Services, a multi-service, community based, not-for-profit agency that provides programs for individuals of all ages in our community.

“Our profound thanks go to the Queens Post and Woodside/Sunnyside Runners Club for organizing the run/walk,” said Judy Zangwill, executive director of Sunnyside Community Services. “We are all looking forward to enjoying the race with everyone again this year.”

The run/walk starts at 10 a.m., with an opening ceremony kicking off at 9:30 a.m.

Children’s dashes, an immensely popular component of the event, will take place on Skillman Avenue at 10:45 a.m. There will be dashes for children as young as 2 and 3.

The admission fee for the Sunnyside Post Mile, which includes a limited-edition race day shirt, is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (60 and above) and $10 for children. Children who participate in the dash also receive a race day shirt.

Participants are encouraged to register before Sept. 9 to ensure a T-shirt size of their choosing.

Runners are also able to set-up teams and create their own fund-raising pages.

Sponsors for the event will be announced as the date approaches. Those who are interested in sponsoring can email run@queenspost.com
