DOT will be giving away free bike helmets later this month. (DOT)

June 14, 2019 By Laura Hanrahan

The Department of Transportation will be hosting a free bike helmet fitting and giveaway at Juniper Valley Park later this month.

The event, sponsored by Council Member Robert Holden, will take place on Saturday June 22, beginning at noon.

DOT representatives will be on site at the park near Juniper Boulevard North and 80th Street with helmets of all sizes for all ages. The representatives will teach each attendee how to properly fit and wear their helmet before giving it to them. The event is expected to wrap up at 3:30 p.m.

Helmets are required by law in New York State for cyclists ages 13 and younger. As part of the City’s Vision Zero, DOT hosts helmet giveaways throughout the spring, summer and fall in all five boroughs to encourage the use of helmets for cyclists of all ages.

Parents or legal guardians of children under 18 years of age must be present at the event to sign a waiver.
