Jan. 31, 2024 By Rachel Butler A Queens council member is calling for live animal slaughter markets to be moved outside of New York City following unannounced visits to a market in Ridgewood and another one in Bushwick on Jan. 17.  Council Member Robert Holden, who represents Glendale, Middle Village and surrounding areas, is pushing for the change after visiting the Tiba Live Poultry Slaughter market, located at 905 Wykoff Ave. in Ridgewood, and the Kikiriki Live Poultry market, located at 334 Linden St. in Bushwick, where he alleges the animals are being mistreated. Vincent Cannizzaro, former Christ The King women’s basketball coach, dies at 82

Jan. 29, 2024 By Ethan Marshall Vincent Cannizzaro, who spent 19 seasons as head coach of the women’s basketball team at Christ The King High School in Middle Village, died Saturday at the age of 82 following a battle with cancer. During his time as head coach from 1981-1999, Cannizzaro earned 456 wins. Under his leadership, the team won 12 New York State Catholic High School championships, as well as 10 consecutive New York State Federation titles. Rents drop in NYC for first time in eight months: report

Jan. 26, 2024 By Ethan Marshall The median rent price for one-bedroom and two-bedroom units in New York City both went down from December 2023 to January 2024, marking the first time since May that these prices went down month-over-month, according to a report by the real estate firm Zumper. The median rent for one-bedroom units in New York City decreased 2.9% from $4,161 in December 2023 to $4,040 in January 2024. Jan. 24, 2024 By Ethan Marshall The number of reported rapes and burglaries across Queens both dropped over the last month compared to the same period of time last year, according to the latest crime stats released by the NYPD Monday. During the 28-day period from Dec. 25 to Jan. 21, the number of reported rapes went down 20% in northern Queens, from 15 reported cases last year to 12 this year.
