A woman has been left in critical condition after a bloody attack in Ridgewood earlier this morning.

Around 8:30 a.m., police responded to a call of an ongoing assault at the rear entrance of 1724 Suydam St., near Cypress Avenue. As the officers approached the scene, they saw the 76-year-old assailant on top of a 50-year-old woman.

The responding officers restrained the man and placed him under arrest. The woman, who was unresponsive, had lacerations to her neck—the result of a knife that was found on the scene. The officers provided emergency care until EMS arrived and transported the victim, who was in critical condition, to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.

The relationship between the woman and her attacker remains unknown at this time. An investigation is ongoing and charges against the man are still pending, police said.
