57-Year-Old Man Struck, Killed by Van on Flushing Avenue: NYPD

A 57-year-old man was killed after being struck by a van while walking on Flushing Avenue in Ridgewood yesterday morning, according to police.

Ping Chung, who lived in Flushing, was crossing mid-block near 1937 Flushing Ave. when the 31-year-old driver of a 2013 Ford van struck him at around 8 a.m. on Feb. 19. Chung, police said, was walking south to north on the avenue, while the driver was headed east.

Chung was found by police with trauma to the head at the scene, with EMS transporting him to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Medical Examiner determined on Feb. 20 that Chung died as a result of complications from the injuries sustained from the collision.

The NYPD Highway Collision Investigation team has been notified and the investigation is ongoing.

I don’t understand why not take him to Wyckoff Hospital that’s much nearer and also treats trauma. Elmhurst hospital is nowhere near.

Christopher Santana, 31, of Bedford Avenue in Bedford Stuyvesant, was taken into custody and booked at the 102nd Precinct in Richmond Hill in a forcible touching and robbery case that was being investigated by detectives out of the 104th Precinct in Ridgewood.
