A 29-year-old Ridgewood man was convicted of manslaughter for fatally stabbing his female roommate in 2016, the Queens District Attorney announced today.

Render Stetson-Shanahan, of Stanhope Street, was found guilty of manslaughter in the second  degree following a non-jury bench trial.

Stetson-Shanahan was seen roaming the Ridgewood neighborhood in only his underwear, while carrying a knife shortly before midnight on Sept. 28, 2016, according to the trial testimony.

Police found him back in his bed and bleeding from a self-inflicted wound to his right thigh at his shared apartment on Stanhope Street. In the next room, 26-year-old Carolyn Bush was bleeding profusely from several stab wounds. Stetson-Shanahan had stabbed her multiple times in her neck and torso, according to the testimony.

Bush was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. The puncture wounds had caused massive injuries to her heart and lungs and severed an artery, according to trial testimony.

“This was a horribly disturbing case,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said. “The defendant returned to the apartment he shared with his roommate late one night and stabbed her multiple times, causing her death.”

Stetson-Shanahan will be sentenced on March 26 and could face up to 5 to 15 years in prison.
