A Middle Village street was co-named to honor the late Lorraine Sciulli, a longtime civic volunteer within the community at a ceremony Thursday.
The corner of 77th Street and 62nd Avenue was co-named “Lorraine Sciulli Way” at the ceremony, where Council Member Robert Holden and members of the Juniper Park Civic Association (JPCA) honored her memory.
Sciulli lived and grew up in in Middle Village since 1939 and attended Resurrection Ascension Grammar School and Grover Cleveland High School. She began working with the JPCA around 1980 and ultimately served as the association’s vice president and the editor and advertising manager of the Juniper Berry newsletter.
She was also a member of Community Board 5 for 20 years.
“I worked with Lorraine for 30 years and she first got me involved in the JPCA and Community Board 5,” Council Member Holden said. “She was a fierce advocate for maintaining the quality of life in our neighborhood and gave most of her adult life to volunteerism. I will always admire Lorraine for the example she set, and I am extremely proud to help honor her legacy.”
Sciulli passed away in November 2017 at the age of 82.
