After more than 10 years of closure, the ground floor of the former Ridgewood Theater has reopened as a Blink Fitness gym.

The New York City-based chain held its celebratory grand opening today at 55-27 Myrtle Ave., with food, music, and a giveaway of 50 one-year gym memberships to the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council—a non-profit focused on education and employment opportunities in the community.

The new location marks the 75th studio for the fitness chain, and is their eighth in Queens. In December of last year, Community Board 5 District Manager Gary Giordano said up to 6,500 members are expected to join the new studio, with 650 members using the facility each day.

The Ridgewood location offers three enrollment plans, and has the facilities and equipment for those seeking cardio and strength training, one-on-one personal training, and more.

The theater, built in 1916 as a three-story cinema, has undergone substantial changes since its closing. A conversion of the upper floors, as well as a two-story addition, made way for 50 rental apartments that hit the market in 2016 with sky-high prices—one bedrooms started at $2,300.

Despite the changes, the facade of the building has remained the same, having received landmark status in 2010.

I love this gym but it’s not perfect because there’s no bike racks. There’s no parking around the area only metered and it’s a hassle to make sure that meter doesn’t expires. I have made numerous request for bike racks. I was told there’s no manger at this location or no one knows. Staff is not very informative. Hope someone that knows can help to make this gym perfect. Thank you

A Brooklyn man was indicted by a Queens grand jury on charges of manslaughter, drunk driving and other crimes for a fatal collision in Astoria that killed his long-time girlfriend and mother of their young child in February.

Ray Perez, 27, of Caton Avenue in Flatbush, was arraigned Thursday in Queens Supreme Court on a 13-count indictment charging him with vehicular manslaughter for allegedly speeding through a stop sign in Astoria, colliding with another vehicle and slamming into two parked cars, and then driving nearly four miles away to a street in Maspeth before seeking help for his 29-year-old girlfriend Bridget Enriquez, who later succumbed to her injuries.
