Pesticides will be sprayed over several central Queens neighborhoods Thursday as part of a mosquito control initiative, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
Trucks will be spraying sections of Maspeth, Middle Village, West Maspeth, Glendale and Blissville starting at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22 through until 6 a.m. the following morning.
The spraying will be postponed until Monday, Aug. 26 or Tuesday, Aug. 27 in the case of bad weather.
The spraying will occur in sections of the 11101, 11104, 11373, 11378 and 11379 zip codes.
The Health Department says that it will be spraying very low concentrations of insecticides Anvil® 10+10 and/or DeltaGard® from trucks in order to reduce mosquito activity and combat the risk of the West Nile virus.
The DOH said that the pesticides present a low risk to people and pets, but that some people who are sensitive to the spray may experience a rash or short-term throat or eye irritation. People with respiratory problems may also be affected.
To combat this, the Health Department recommends that residents stay indoors during the spraying and to wash skin and clothing that may have been exposed to the pesticides after the spraying is completed. The DOH also recommends washing all fruits and vegetables with water.
To reduce the presence of mosquitos, the Health Department encourages people to eliminate any standing water on their property, along with conducting regular checks on insect screens and using an approved insect repellent.
